On 1 September 2010 we took a trip to visit the Minister of Education and Science. It turned out to be a big media event that was a bit interesting.

We arrived in three buses which was interesting due to some of the city streets being so narrow around the ministry. When we arrived, one bus was taking at least a 10-point turn just to get into the driveway to park. Our program coordinator, Nino, got impatient of waiting for the bus to make the turn so we jumped out and walked in the back way.

We go into the rotunda and see empty seats and media everywhere. Those of us at the front stop and wonder what we are getting into. We are urged to sit down and we do – in the back. We are then told that the chairs are just for the volunteers so we have to move up to the front. I sit in the front row. Shortly after sitting down, the media come up to the front and set up their cameras right in front of us facing towards where the Minister will be talking, not us. Whew! But then there are 10 cameraman and mic people in front of us and we cannot see. WTF!

Next thing we know there is a reported asking the lady next to me if she would do an interview. Whew, not me. She goes up and two other volunteers are also asked to do an interview. All three are ladies (thinking back on this, I think that this was because teaching is a ladies job – lots of old stereotypes here) with two being blond and one being black. Being black here is a big deal for most locals have never seen a black person in person. (side story – we have heard stories from volunteers that have been here since August on how their host families were disappointed that they did not get a black person)

After the interviews are over, the Minister comes in and does interviews with the media. After he is done, the media pull to the back of the room and he then addresses us. In pretty good English. Basically, he says thank you for helping them start this new program that was started by the President and that what we are doing is very important to their country (e.g., don’t frack this up for us!)

After he is done talking, Maia, the head of the Teach and Learn with Georgia (TLG) program addresses us briefly. She then tells us to enjoy the drinks in the back and we all relax. The drinks are water, orange juice, apple juice, red wine and white wine. All local. Well, at least, I am assume it was local. I had the white wine and it was pretty good.

Here are a few pictures from the event (or view full screen slideshow of photos here).

For those that actually go to my blog instead of getting the posts sent to your mailbox, you have no doubt noticed that every time you load a page, the header picture changes. As I mentioned before, all of the pictures in the header are from photos that I have taken over the years. Well, I realized that I have not created any new header pictures in at least a year, so I went through all of my Oregon and Chicago photos and created some more.

Below is the collection of all of the headers that are on my blog. I like to look through them every now and then and thought I would share them in case you would like to see all of them (or view full screen slideshow of photos here).

Mary Rose helped me develop an alter ego named Sinister J. Or, maybe he has be there all along and he has finally been allowed to surface. Either way, he exists and has yet to be spotted in the wild. Until now.

Mary Rose got into stenciling and spray painting a couple months ago and decided to make a stencil of Sinister J. But first, what does Sinister J look like? It took a black sheet and holding a lamp in the right spot, but we finally found him.

The blurriness on the right side of my face is from using the eraser tool in photoshop. Other than that, no touch ups.

Now, it was Mary Rose’s turn to create a stencil and do her magic. This was a birthday present for me so I could not help or be a part of the process. The final result, very sinister indeed.

Thank you Mary Rose!

When last we met our hero, tickets were bought to go on a 90-minute architecture river tour and to go up into the Hanckock Observatory. Up first the architecture tour.

The tour went down Chicago River towards the Willis (Sears) Tower and then up and down the lake. Lots of buildings and lots of stories, of which I remember very little now that it is a month and a half later. Stupid brain. So rather than try and sound regal you in stories, I found a site that I used to figure out which building was which in my photos.

Actually, after looking at the photos, two stories came to mind. First, you will see Navy Pier and a ferris wheel in the pictures below. That ferris wheel is 150ft tall. The ferris wheel that was built for the World’s Columbian Expo in 1893 was 264ft in height.

The next story is about Merchandise Mart. This building was opened in 1930 and was the largest building in the world, in terms of floor space, until the Pentagon opened in 1943. It is now the 25th largest in the world, but second largest in the US.

Here are some photos from the tour (or view the photos here):

Next was the trip up to the observation deck of Hancock Tower. I will admit that I was a bit nervous going to the 94th. I am ok with being high, but am not ok with being on the edge. For example, riding the elevator up the Eiffel Tower in Vegas for the first time was a little nerve racking. Luckily the elevator for Hancock was in the middle of the building and lasted only about 40 seconds.

We got up there shortly before sunset so we took our time and hung out so we could see the sunset. The observation deck had a little cafe with seats facing west so we had a nice view of the sunset. A portion of the south wall lets you walk “outside” where instead of glass windows there is a mesh wall. I wonder what it would be like to be out there in the middle of a snow storm.

The weirdest part of being up there was that I found at least five black widow spiders, or something equivalent in size, that were hanging out on the outside of the windows just under the rafters. I also saw bugs flying around. Never though that there would be spiders and bugs outside 94 floors up.

Here are some photos from the observation deck (or view the photos here):

Well, my airbags work. On Saturday, a lady pulled out in front of me and our cars made pretty noises. I was dazed for a few seconds by the impact of my head on the airbag, or at least that is what I assumed caused my head to be spinning for it all happened so fast. When my ears stopped ringing and my head righted itself with the world, I realized what happened and that I was still in the middle of the street so I pulled my car over to the side. Hey wait, my car still runs – well that’s a good sign.

I got out of the car and went to the sidewalk to take a couple breathes and make an assessment of myself. My neck was hurting and I had a red mark on my left arm, probably from the airbag chemicals, but that was it. Good. Then I hear a voice from above – Are you ok? I look up and see a guy standing on top of a two story parking garage and tell him I was ok. When my eyes focused I realized that it was a cop. Wow, how convenient.

I walk across the street to where the lady pulled over to make sure she was alright. It was two teenage girls and they were in shock but were ok. I vaguely remember hearing them scream in a very high pitch when the cars hit. Knowing that they were ok, I went back across the street to get my insurance and registration. On the way back to their car, a guy on the sidewalk asked if the glasses in the street where mine or the girls. I look and they are mine. Oh yeah, I was wearing sunglasses and my window was open, so during the impact they somehow flew off my head and out the window. Looking back on it, I am glad that they were not on my face when my face impacted with the airbag – that could have really hurt. I pick them up and they seem perfectly fine. Neat-o.

By the time I get back to the lady’s car, the cop is there talking to them. I give him my papers and take a few more breathes. While I was waiting I decided to finally take a look at my car. Ouch. Hood and bumper are smashed in. Kind of looks like I ran into a pole. Oh look, I can see my battery. Wait, why is my windshield busted? Wait, did my passenger airbag do that? It must of. I ask the cop if that is normal and he says yes. Wow, had no idea. I look in my car and the gas is still spewing out of the airbags. Kind of smelt like popcorn. Why is there a coffee mug on the floor of my passenger seat? How long has that been under the seat? Oh look, radiator fluid is leaking, radiator is probably busted.

The cop comes over and gives me my paperwork back and a form with all of our contact and insurance info on it. He asks me if my car is drivable and I told him that I was able to drive it to the side of the road. He asks if I want to drive it home? Wait, what? Is it legal to drive the car after the airbags deploy? Looking back, I do not know if he ever answered that question. Instead, we decide to park my car in the parking garage until I could figure out where I am going to tow it. The lady’s car would not start so they had to push it into a gas station.

Mary Rose was nice enough to pick me up, take me home and drug me. We watched 500 Summers while I iced my neck. I tossed and turned a lot while sleeping but today my neck does feel better. Not as stiff, but movable still a little sore.

I am currently applying for a job overseas and am kind of hoping that the insurance companies tell me it is cheaper to total the car then fix it and will just give me cash. Saves me the hassle of trying to sell the car. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thank you airbags.

I am finally getting around to writing about Chicago. Here is the first post. There will be more.

In the middle of June I went to Chicago to visit a former student of mine from Dobson, Amy. She has lived there for about 1.5 years and was gracious enough to put me up and put up with me.

The first night there, Thursday, we walked a bit down the lake and went to a pizza place to get Chicago style pizza. It was good, but way too much cheese for me, but it did feed us for a few days.

Amy took Friday off and we had a busy day. The week that I was there happened to be the same week that several museums had free days so on Friday we went to the Museum of Science & Industry. As did everyone and their mom. The museum was pretty good – lots of hands on stuff and had quite a few rooms to go through. In case you care, the museum is in the Palace of Fine Arts building from the Columbian World’s Expo from 1893. Here are some photos of the outside of the museum, along with the other museums that I saw on the trip (or view the photos here):

The slideshow will not work for your browser, but you can also
view the photos here

After the museum, we took a bus to get back up to downtown. Side note – I bought a week bus pass and it was well worth it! This happened to be the same day of the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup victory parade, so even though the parade was over, traffic was still recovering. While we were crawling through Michigan Ave, the bus was behind an Oldsmobile, or something like that, from the 80s that was lifted so high that the driver’s head was even with the bus driver’s head. When people saw the car, they would stop, stare and then whip out their cameras or phones to take pictures. People even jumped out of their car, since we were not moving, to take a picture. If it wasn’t for the spectacle the car was creating, being stuck in the bus in traffic would have really sucked.

We got off the bus and went to the Hanckock Observatory to purchase a package deal of going up to the top of the tower and going on a 90 minute river/lake architecture tour. More on those next time.

This past weekend, Kristen, a VISTA in my group that is out on the coast, and I went hiking in the Mt. Hood area. This was my first time into the Cascades and I was glad that I was going to finally see Hood close up. I was also glad that the weather was perfect – sunny with a light breeze.

We did the Tom Dick and Harry Mountain hike which has a stop at Mirror Lake about half way up. The trail to the top was just under 3 miles with about a 1700 foot elevation gain that was never strenuous.

When we made it to the top we had a stunning view of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier (when the clouds cooperated), Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Jefferson. I was starving so I busted out my double decker PB&J sandwich while Kristen did some exploring. A lady passed me on the way down and made a comment that she was jealous of my sandwich. She should be. Kristen found a great sitting rock that was rounded out very well and faced Mt. Hood. We ate, we napped and we enjoyed the great weather and the view.

This hike alone has made me want to stay in Portland so I can get a real paying job and have money to make more trips this like around the rest of Oregon.

Here are the photos (or view the photos here):

A couple of weeks ago Steve and I made it back to Silver Falls. We went there on his birthday but got there late in the afternoon so we had little time to venture. This time we left early and brought two of his VISTA co-workers along with us – Sharon and Heather. It was a great day for a hike and we all had a good time.

If you hike the full 8+ mile loop trail, you will come across 10 official waterfalls (e.g., there are others, but they are not on the map). Towards the end of the hike, I wondered how many feet of water falling we saw. I found this brochure online and added up the numbers – 977ft. That’s a lot of water falling! Comparatively, Multnomah Falls in the gorge, the tallest in the state, is 620 feet by itself.

Here are some photos (or view the photos here):

Unfortunately, the trip had a very bad event. A college student fell off the top of a waterfall and died. The scary part is that we were at that waterfall when it happened but luckily we did not see it happen.

Last week, Jen and I took our first road trip to McMinnville and Tillamook. We met with two county health departments and two hospitals. It was very worthwhile to hear what they are doing and how they are using our systems or why they are not. They also seemed to appreciate the face to face time.

We stayed at Hotel Oregon, which is one of the McMenamins hotels. It was a five story building in the middle of downtown and it was pretty swanky. Each room is themed after someone famous from Oregon, or at least that was my impression. The best part was the Rooftop Bar. The top floor had a small room, maybe 6 tables plus the bar, and then a huge patio area on the roof. You will see pictures of it below. Jen and I spent a lot of time there. Oh, and the $1 happy hour peppered tator tots were awesome!

We walked around town a bit and came across a small park with the best jungle gym ever! It was all wood and had a castle theme. If I played paint ball I would totally want to play in this fortress.

In Tillamook, we took a quick side trip to the Tillamook Cheese Factory and took the self guided tour. We felt bad for the workers in the factory for the self guided tour allows people to go up on the second floor and look down into the factory and watch them do their work. I would feel weird knowing that someone was literally always looking over my shoulder. Anyways, there were some free samples and Jen and I loved the garlic spicy pepper cheddar cheese. You can find it in the specialty cheese section.

Overall, it was a good trip. Next up, Astoria!
