Dear Lazy Bums –

I thought I would give you a few helpful hints to help you enjoy my exquisite writing prowess.

I have the emails set up to be sent sometime around 0100 Georgia time. For those of you not keeping track, that will be around 1400 Pacific Time. Also, that will be the day before. Ok, wait. This is not helpful anymore, just confusing. How’s this:

Email sent on Tuesday at 0100 in Georgia = Monday at 1400 on the west coast of the states

Please keep in mind that Georgian time is a bit like Costa Rican time – they have their own sense of time that does not compute with the western world. So the actually moment of when the email gets sent will vary.

You will read posts that have text like the following:

Here are a few pictures from blah blah blah (or view full screen slideshow of photos here)

And then you will see no pictures. This is because the slideshow software I use only works if you go to the blog. As Nelson has said for the past 20 years, Ha ha! To see the slideshow, simply click on the link that has the text “view full screen slideshow of photos here”.

Even though I should be honored for my writing ability (thanks high school engrish class!), I do not write every day. This means you will not get an email from me every day, only on days that I decide to grace you with my talent. Or when I have time, internet connection and am in the right mood to write. Can you tell that I am in the right mood to write right now?

You can reply to the emails and your message will be sent just like any other email. If you want to post a comment on the blog itself, you will have to go to the blog (assuming you know the address), find the post you want to comment on and leave your message there.

Sincerely,

An arrogant bastard

For those that actually go to my blog instead of getting the posts sent to your mailbox, you have no doubt noticed that every time you load a page, the header picture changes. As I mentioned before, all of the pictures in the header are from photos that I have taken over the years. Well, I realized that I have not created any new header pictures in at least a year, so I went through all of my Oregon and Chicago photos and created some more.

Below is the collection of all of the headers that are on my blog. I like to look through them every now and then and thought I would share them in case you would like to see all of them (or view full screen slideshow of photos here).

The slideshow will not work for your browser, but you can also
view the photos here

I hate shopping for shoes. My feet are nowhere near the typical person and that leaves me with very few options. Narrow heals, wide toe box, low arch, long feet. Great combination. Someone told me that I have European feet. Maybe I need to go to Europe to find shoes.

On top of that, every shoe store tells you different things or has different brands. Or one says that a shoe will fit me well and then another says that that is not a great shoe for my feet. Plus there are just so many different things going on with the shoes that it is just impossible for one person to know and/or remember everything. Arch support, water proof, breathable, posting, laces, blah, blah, blah.

I got new trail running shoes back in May and they started off great. Fit well and were well ventilated. But about a month after getting the shoes, the side of my leg right above the ankle started to hurt. And hurt. And the pain never really went away. It finally dawned on me that somehow the shoes were the cause of the problem. So I went to a store to ask.

They tell me that the shoes are posted and that that means that there is extra arch support and, to me, it sounded like the soles were twisted a bit instead of flat. Why would you make soles that have a twist in them? So I start the process of trying on shoes. Yeah! It took a couple of different stores, but I think that I have successfully found a pair.

Can someone start working on a way to make feet that come with shoes that just snap in at the ankle bone. That would be sooooooo much easier.

On Wednesday, the US soccer team played Algeria in the final group stage game that the US had to win in order to advance in the World Cup. Here is link to a video of what happened in the 91st minute of play. In case you did not know, soccer games are 90 minutes long plus any additional time due to injuries, penalties or any other time stoppages.

Below is a video that someone put together of people’s reactions of what happened in the 91st minute.

See, there are soccer fans in the US!

Previously, I alluded to the fact that I am not a big facebook fan. Yesterday an article came out listing the top 10 reasons to quit facebook. Some of the highlights:

At the same time that they’re telling developers how to access your data with new APIs, they are relatively quiet about explaining the implications of that to members.

It’s one thing to talk to developers about how great all this sharing is going to be; quite another to actually see what that means in the form of files anyone can download.

At this point, all your data is shared with applications that you install. Which means now you’re not only trusting Facebook, but the application developers, too, many of whom are too small to worry much about keeping your data secure.

…account deletion is incredibly (and intentionally) confusing.

Basically, facebook opens up your user data, no matter what privacy settings you have, to any developer that wants to use the facebook system to create applications or sell ads. Sounds pleasant. I wonder how long until a major breach occurs and people start moving off of facebook. I also wonder how long before myspace or a new social site that takes advantage of this potential issue, starts growing in users.

Came across an article about a province in China sterilizing their population as part of a “crackdown on violations of the country’s controversial one-child policy.”

A 20-day campaign was begun on 7 April to sterilize 9,559 adults in Puning county, which with a population of 2.24 million is the most populous area of Guangdong Province. On 12 April local officials said they had already achieved about half their goal.

Doctors have been working 20 hour days to complete the massive round of surgeries. Local officials are so determined to reach their target they have been detaining relatives of those who resist the operation, potentially in violation of Chinese law.

That’s pretty fucked up right here.
