I’m here!

I got here with little problems. Well, the main problem being that I hardly slept. I got to Xi’an at around noon on Saturday and was able to stay up until about 9pm. Then I crashed hard and slept until about 6am. So far, jet lag has not been a prob.

Banned Items

Ok, I was wrong. One more post before I take off.

Just an fyi – neosporin is a banned substance.

One of my carry-ons got searched because the shape of my mom’s bar soap – they couldn’t tell what it was from the x-ray. While they were searching my bag, they also looked [...]

The day has arrived

When I started doing my last round of packing this afternoon, it finally hit me like a ton of bricks that this is really happening. I have been dreaming about traveling to Asia for so long that this trip did not seem real. This is probably a bad anolgy, but I compared it to [...]

Request for Gift Ideas

Instead of me trying to figure out what to get everyone, I figure I will turn the tides and have you let me know if there is anything in particular that you would like. I make no promises, but this way I can try to get you something that you might actually like/use.

My Job in China

I found out this week what I’ll be doing in China. I will be working at two schools that help handicapped and mentally challenged kids. The email I was sent gave me a long description of what the school does for the children and I started to get nervous ’cause I don’t know jack about helping kids with needs. Anyone got a port-a-potty?

I have heard that the toilets in Asia just consist of a whole in the ground and so I decided to search the internet to see what they are like. I found two good sites: the beijing guide and another china-guide.

You can walk and bike across the top of the wall.

When am I going?

I leave 8/31 and return 9/23. CCS requires a minimum of 2 weeks and I had enough vacation time to take 3. Plus, I did not want to give my boss a heart-attack by taking more than 3. ;]

And for those animal people out there that keep asking me who is taking care [...]

What group am I going with?

Since the Peace Corps fell through, I have been looking for other groups to do a volunteer stint. I was leaning towards going with i-to-i until I found Cross Cultural Solutions. I cannot give a good reason why I choose CCS over i-to-i, but I did. The reason why I am going with a group like CCS instead of just being a tourist is that with this group I feel that I will get exposed more to the real culture of the area and not just the artificial cutlture the touristy areas produce.

Why am I going to China?

Simply put, mail order bride. I have been looking online for a long time but just do not know how much I can trust the sites. I mean, is the lady in the photo really who I will be matched up with? So I decided that if I am in China, I can see [...]
