On christmas, Linda and I went to Colorado Bend State Park to go for a hike. This is the first hike we have been on in over two months so it was nice to get away.
Colorado Bend is north-east of the ranch and about a two hour drive. The park has about 7 or so trails with the Colorado River running through the east part of the park. Yes, I didn’t know that there was a Colorado River in Texas either. The entrance to the park is on the north side but the ranger station (or whatever the building is called where you have to go and pay your fee) is way on the south side, so you have to drive all the way through the park to pay and get a map and then go where you want.
The road was mostly caliche and cedar and oak trees lined the road most of the way. The trees that were right along the road where frosted white from the caliche. Considering it was christmas, I tried to imagine that it was snow that was on the trees. I kind of had a hard time doing this for it was at least 70 degrees out.
We went on three trails while we were there. The first one was very short for we had to cross a stream by walking in the water and Linda did not want to get her shoes wet. The second one went along the river and on the other side there was a small cliff with cabins and homes that looked very nice. You could tell in areas that the river was very shallow and the lines on the cliff indicated that it was down about 10 feet. It would probably be a nice place to come in the summer and go swimming or kayaking.
The last trail we went on was about a 2 mile hike that led to Gordon Falls. The falls were not huge due to the lack of rain in the area, but you could tell that the falls could be over 75 feet wide. Unfortunately, the sun was just over the falls so I could not get a lot of pictures due to the glare, but I did get a few as you can see below.
